Project Record
In ProgressTortuga Foundry
The industrial smelting complex built into the base of the Tortuga Monolith, supplying processed iron, copper, and stone to every project in The Forgelands.
Tortuga Foundry
The Tortuga Foundry is the industrial heart of The Forgelands, built directly into the stone skirt of the Tortuga Monolith. Every major project in the world draws on its output: smelted iron and gold for the Grand Rail Line, processed stone for the stations, and, once the copper wing is fitted, the copper that half the world's architecture now specifies.
Site Selection
The Monolith offered three things no other site could: deep iron seams directly beneath the works, effectively unlimited stone, and natural interior caves that were incorporated into the storage levels rather than excavated at cost. The foundry reads as part of the landmark rather than a structure beside it, which was the architectural intent.
Operations
The primary furnace hall runs banks of blast furnaces for ore and arrays of standard furnaces for stone and glass, fed by an automated hopper backbone. The super smelter core maintains throughput around the clock. Fuel arrives from the Spruce Logging Camp by road — the slowest link in the chain, and the standing argument for the southern rail spur.
Current Status
The furnace hall is operational. The copper wing, intended to process output from the Dripstone Copper Pit, is framed but unfitted. The Copperlings inquire about its completion date with a regularity the foundry log describes as liturgical.
Field Notes
Drugal MacGruder inspects the furnace hall on his own schedule and has approved it twice, which by Drugal's standards constitutes a commendation. The Smithies faction regards the foundry as the most important structure in the world. The foundry declines to argue.
