Youngest of the MacGruder children, officially the keeper of the chickens, unofficially the homestead's early-warning system.

Lorne MacGruder

Lorne MacGruder is the youngest of Drugal MacGruder's children and holds the homestead's least prestigious and most faithfully executed office: keeper of the chickens. The chickens are, by every measure in Bronwyn's ledgers, the best-kept livestock in The Forgelands. Lorne would like this noted in the official record. It is hereby noted.

Known Role

Beyond the poultry, Lorne functions as the homestead's unofficial watchman. His room faces the road by his own insistence, and he watches it with a dedication the rest of the family finds excessive right up until it is useful. Lorne was the first to report the Myst banners on the northern treeline, a full day before the patrol confirmed them, and the Archives have since learned to log his sightings rather than humor them.

Character

Lorne is curious, fast, and constitutionally incapable of staying where he is told. He has been retrieved from the road to Savanna Villa often enough that the retrieval route has a name. He maintains a collection of items he describes as artifacts and the Archives describe as rocks, with one exception: a smooth, faintly warm stone he says he found near the Whispering Well, which has been quietly added to the watch list.

Lorne has asked to be archived as "Lorne MacGruder, Explorer." The Archives have offered "Explorer (Provisional)." Negotiations concluded successfully.
