Andy's Shulker Box Kit System - Kit Layouts

The goal is not to create boxes full of random supplies.

Exploration Kit Design Notes & Replaceability Rules

As the kit system evolved, it became clear that simply filling shulker boxes with useful items was not enough. Every slot inside a shulker box is valuable, and every item included should justify its presence.

The goal is not to create boxes full of random supplies.

The goal is to create highly specialized kits that solve specific problems and support specific activities.

The Replaceability Rule

Every item included in a kit should pass at least one of three tests.

If an item fails all three tests, it probably does not belong in the kit.

Every kit must be evaluated for context based on its name, and then scenarios worked through on how, when, and why this kit would be used.

Test 1 — Difficult to Replace

The item cannot be reasonably obtained during the activity the kit is designed for.

Examples:

  • Lodestone
  • Compass
  • Recovery Compass
  • Spyglass
  • Brush
  • Shulker Shells
  • Ender Pearls
  • Leads
  • Name Tags
  • Totems
  • Armor Trim Templates

These items are difficult, time-consuming, or impossible to replace during normal gameplay.

Test 2 — Frequently Consumed

The item is expected to be used in significant quantities during the activity.

Examples:

  • Firework Rockets
  • Food
  • Torches
  • Lanterns
  • Signs
  • Maps
  • Rails
  • Powered Rails
  • Scaffolding

These items are expected to be consumed or depleted while performing the activity.

Test 3 — Enables a Core Function

The item unlocks an important capability.

Examples:

  • Cartography Table
  • Furnace
  • Crafting Table
  • Ender Chest
  • Bed
  • Brewing Stand
  • Smithing Table

Without these items, the kit cannot fully perform its intended role.

Example: Why Chests Were Removed

A chest initially appeared in several expedition-oriented kits.

After review, it was removed.

A chest fails all three tests:

  • Easy to replace
  • Not consumed
  • Does not enable a unique function

A chest can be crafted almost anywhere with a few logs.

Therefore it does not deserve permanent kit space.

Example: Why Shulker Shells Were Added

Shulker Shells are difficult to obtain and cannot be reasonably acquired during most expeditions.

They allow the creation of additional Shulker Boxes when unexpected loot volumes are encountered.

Examples:

  • Ancient Cities
  • Trial Chambers
  • End Cities
  • Large Mining Expeditions
  • Archaeological Sites
  • CWES Expeditions

Two stacks of Shulker Shells can create:

  • 64 additional Shulker Boxes
  • 1,728 additional inventory slots

This makes them far more valuable than carrying pre-crafted storage containers.
