Overview
Andy's Explorers Backpack is a survival-first, modular backpack for Minecraft Bedrock. Equip it in the off-hand, place it as a real container, and build it from a 27-slot travel pack into a 72-slot expedition system with a second Bulk Storage page, sorting, protected recovery, specialized pockets, item-collection modules, and camping tools.
The add-on is designed around safe, native ItemStacks instead of bundle capacity or fragile virtual-item shortcuts. Filled Shulker Boxes retain their contents, every physical backpack has its own identity, and earned upgrades belong permanently to the player. Powerful conveniences are deliberately expensive, configurable, and bounded so the backpack stays useful without turning survival into a portable creative inventory.
The core backpack
Craft the backpack in a crafting table — the recipe unlocks when the player first obtains a Bundle:
Bundle | Leather | Bundle
Bundle | Tripwire Hook | Bundle
Bundle | Leather | Bundle
- Equip it in the off-hand slot (where a shield would go) to wear it on your back and enable equipped modules.
- Use it in open air to open the management menu — upgrades, settings, appearance, and the Explorer's Guidebook.
- Place it to open its native chest-style storage interface; interact to open a placed pack, and use its pack-up action to return it to item form.
- A backpack cannot be nested inside another backpack.
Every backpack has its own persistent storage identity, archived through Bedrock's world-persistent structure system, preserving complete native item data — filled Shulker Boxes, named items, enchanted gear, maps, books, and other component-bearing stacks.
Storage reinforcement
The base backpack begins with 27 slots; each reinforcement adds a full nine-slot row. Open the upgrade screen while carrying the required materials:
| Reinforcement | Cost | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Crafted backpack | 27 slots |
| Iron | 64 Iron Ingots | 36 slots |
| Gold | 64 Gold Ingots | 45 slots |
| Amethyst | 64 Amethyst Shards | 54 slots |
| Emerald | 32 Emeralds | 63 slots |
| Diamond | 32 Diamonds | 72 slots |
| Netherite Protection | 16 Netherite Ingots | 72 slots + fire/lava protection |
Reinforcements are permanent per-player purchases. If a backpack is permanently lost, a newly crafted one keeps the owner's unlocked capacity and modules but starts empty.
Bulk Storage & sorting
- Bulk Storage Roll (64 Diamonds + 64 Leather + 4 Tripwire Hooks) adds a separate, tabbed storage page equal to the current Main capacity, growing automatically with later reinforcements — so a fully reinforced pack provides 72 Main + 72 Bulk slots. Switch pages with the Main Storage and Bulk Storage tabs; automatic routing fills Main first, with Stockpile filter matches preferring Bulk.
- Sorting Module (1 Clock + 64 Redstone Dust + 32 Emeralds) condenses compatible items into full native stacks and organizes Main and Bulk separately whenever the container closes. It never rearranges dedicated pockets, Bulk Filters, the Camping compartment, your inventory, or nearby containers.
Utility pockets
The right-side pocket rail holds twelve restricted pockets. Empty unlocked pockets show a grey silhouette of the accepted item, and invalid items are safely returned. Each of these ten pockets costs 16 Leather + 16 String + 1 Diamond:
Spyglass · Compass · Brush · Boat or Raft · Lead · Saddle · Crafting Table · Furnace · Brewing Stand · Smoker
Workstation pockets carry the normal block for quick retrieval and placement — they don't replace the full vanilla crafting, furnace, brewing, or smoker interfaces with limited scripted screens. Two more specialized pockets:
- Elytra Pocket (32 Phantom Membranes + 64 Purpur Blocks) — stores one Elytra for intentional retrieval or swapping; it does not auto-equip or bypass durability.
- Lamp Pocket (1 Tripwire Hook + 16 Diamonds) — stores one Lantern, Copper Lantern, or Soul Lantern for quick access; it does not fake dynamic held lighting or alter Vibrant Visuals.
Magnet & Vacuum modules
- Magnet (8 Lodestones + 64 Iron Nuggets) — with the backpack equipped in the off-hand, nearby dropped items travel toward the player and gather in a compact pile at their feet. If your inventory can't accept a full stack, the original item entity stays visible and follows at your feet instead of being deleted. Freshly player-dropped items get a short grace period, internal control items are excluded, and world owners can limit or disable collection.
- Vacuum (prerequisite: Magnet; 8 Emerald Blocks + 1 Dragon Head) — uses the same safe, visible attraction flow, then inserts exact native stacks directly into storage. Ordinary items route to Main then Bulk; active Stockpile matches prefer Bulk. If no safe capacity remains, the item stays intact at your feet.
Stockpile & Bulk Filters
Requires the Bulk Storage Roll. Stockpile (64 Emeralds + 1 Chest + 2 Tripwire Hooks) is a routing system, not separate virtual storage — unlocking it opens Bulk Filter 1. Drag one real sample item into the filter slot and matching items are routed from Main into available Bulk space; the sample is removable and Bulk stays unrestricted manual storage. Unlock Filters 2–5 individually for 1 Comparator + 32 Redstone Dust + 16 Amethyst Shards each, so up to five item types can receive Bulk priority. Exact remainders remain safe when Bulk fills.
Owner Lock
Owner Lock (1 Diamond + 16 Iron Bars) restricts opening and packing a deployed backpack to its owner. World owners can allow an operator override from World Settings for administration and recovery.
Death, fire, lava & recovery
On an ordinary death, the backpack deploys at the death location as persistent storage with contents intact — it is not a normal dropped item and does not use the five-minute despawn timer. The final 16-Netherite-Ingot reinforcement adds fire and lava protection; without it, a deployed pack can still be destroyed by fire or lava, and Netherite Protection does not save a pack lost to the void or otherwise permanently destroyed.
If the physical backpack is permanently lost, its contents are gone, but crafting a new backpack restores the player's permanent capacity, modules, cosmetics, filter unlocks, and settings — the replacement is simply empty.
Recovery Locator (8 Echo Shards + 1 Lodestone) — after a recoverable ordinary death deploys the backpack, the owner receives a Recovery Compass on respawn that points to that exact deployed pack and is removed once it's recovered. No compass is issued for a void death, failed deployment, or a pack that no longer exists; if the respawn inventory is full, the compass is placed at your feet.
Appearance: dye & glow stitching
Use the normal Bedrock leather-dyeing flow with dyed cauldron water to color the backpack. Natural leather and all sixteen standard dye families are supported (the same color family as Andy's Dyeable Item Frames), and washing restores the natural look. Glow Stitching (1 Glow Ink Sac), purchased from Backpack Appearance, adds a bright emissive broken-stitch trim — more vibrant color, though it creates no world light. Dye and glow state persist through carrying, placement, capacity migration, ordinary death, and recovery.
Camping: bedroll & campsite kit
- Bedroll Module (16 Hay Bales + 2 Tripwire Hooks + 64 Amethyst Shards) opens a separate Camping tab with three rows of restricted expedition slots: bed and supplies (one reusable vanilla Bed, two Food slots, one Coal/Charcoal slot); travel utility (a Book & Quill journal, Water Bucket, Lava Bucket, and Campfire slot); and a campsite slot for the Campsite Kit. The Bed slot accepts any of the sixteen reusable colored vanilla beds — withdraw and place it to use genuine Minecraft sleep, spawn-point, monster-distance, multiplayer-sleep-percentage, phantom-rest, and dimension rules. The one-use Straw Bed is excluded.
- Reusable Campsite Kit (32 Wool Blocks of any colors + 64 Charcoal + 64 Leather) grants one owner-linked reusable kit in its dedicated Camping pocket; the dominant color among the 32 wool blocks consumed becomes the permanent tent-canvas and campsite-bed color. Use it on a clear, supported 7×8 area to deploy an original travel camp — a stepped A-frame tent with a genuine reusable two-block vanilla bed, a rear native chest, lantern posts, and a protected campfire. Only one active camp per owner, and other players cannot open its chest. To pack up, interact with the campfire anchor and choose Pack Up Campsite: with the backpack equipped and every camp piece unchanged, chest stacks route through Main/Bulk and the kit is re-archived; if anything is unsafe or storage is full, the whole camp and its cargo stay untouched.
Explorer's Guidebook
Use the backpack in open air and select Explorer's Guidebook to receive or update the signed native Bedrock guide — a paginated book explaining crafting, exact costs, storage rules, modules, death behavior, camping, and world-owner controls.
World-owner & admin settings
Operators can open World Settings from the backpack menu or run:
| Command | Purpose |
|---|---|
/scriptevent andys_explorers:admin | World-owner settings |
/scriptevent andys_explorers:menu | Backpack menu |
/scriptevent andys_explorers:guide | Explorer's Guidebook |
World settings can disable Magnet, Vacuum, Stockpile, or campsite deployment; select Safe, Standard, or Extended collection profiles; and control Owner Lock operator-bypass behavior.
